Suggestion:
Chevy Impala or Ford Taurus.
Cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to repair and relatively good fuel economy makes a 10 year old American sedan a bargain on the used car market.
We just bought a 1995 Ford Taurus for $1500 last month and had to put $300 into fixing the A/C. The car runs good and after a day of washing and waxing it looks great too.

one word. CIVIC. fits the bill and more. the car is amazing. cheap, incredibly reliable!!!!!, and ridiculously fuel efficient.
on a tank of about 40 L, i get about 700 km. thats around 42 mpg.
i got a good deal on a 1991 acura vigor.
it has lowish mileage and is clean.
i got it from the mother,2nd car,of one of my friends.
maybe stay away from dealers, ask friends, check newspaper classifieds
Get a used honda or toyota that has been well maintained. Shoot for below 150k and it should last you through college. Those cars easily handle 200k miles if you take care of them.
How about a Pontiac!?
