When is a Car Considered Sold?

I'm selling my car to a friend. We've already drawn signed the contract and she's started paying me. However, the title's in the mail so it'll be a week or so before its in her name.

When is the car hers without any legal liability for me? I'm concerned cause she has no insurance yet. Am I liable for anything she does until the title is officially in her name?

HELL YES and next time wait for the title to clear, because your butt is in a crack ace. I would draw up a bill of sale, (it does not have to be perfect any blank piece of paper write I sold a 4444 super dog 44 to sarah nobrain for xx on such and such a date in as is condition as of this date she is in possession of this vehicle license number 123 vin number 321 use the date she bought it and at the top put today's date, and then pay the notary public at your bank and both of you sign both copies) write as is on it and that from such and such a date the car is in her possession and she is responsible for insurance and the vehicle itself on such and such a date, and go down to your bank with dummy with no insurance and get two copies NOTARIZED if she is reluctant, technically you still own the car, bluff her and tell her if she will not release you if liability because of her stupidity, you will give her the money back, and take the dang car. (have the money in your hand for show) you have no idea how much trouble that can cause you, if its not insured at the time of an accident,you as the registered owner are a sitting duck and can lose everything from your license for a year, to ending up with a huge judgment award. no amount of money is worth that risque. cover your butt wildman, the bass you save, may be your own, she is an idiot, don't be part of her stupidity ok?
