Used Car What to Inspect

If you buy a used car, you need to check the general condition of the car. Poorly maintained vehicle can cause you a string of problems later on.

If you buy privately, used cars are usually “sold seen”, so check everything carefully.

It is also advisable to check the vehicle’s history, make sure that the car is what it claims to be. For more information, please read more.

• 1 Check the tires. Do not forget the tread depth and side walls damage. If the uneven tires wear, it can be a sign that the wheels are not properly aligned.

• On the steering wheel should rotate smoothly from lock to lock, without any unusual noise or vibration.

• The gears should engage easily and smoothly without any grinding with the clutch fully depressed. Low or very stiff clutch pedal may be a sign of worn parts.

• The engine should idle smoothly and rev evenly. Check the oil dipstick and the inside of the oil filler cap. If you find a brown sludge, walk away – the engine is damaged and will need expensive repairs.

• Check the exhaust gas does not produce a lot of blue smoke when the engine rev – and this shows signs of excessive internal engine wear.

• Check the underside of the car and the car rust. Look at the exhaust system; it looks like it needs to change soon?

• Be suspicious of a very clean engine bay. Has it been cleaned to hide something?

• While under the bonnet, look for signs of flaking paint and rust around the joints of the front panel of the car. This could describe the repairs after crash damage.

• Is the wear of the interior of the car match the meter reading? A low-mileage car with much worn seats and pedals could have been clocked.

• Open and close the doors to check they are working correctly, examine the rubber seals and stamps, or paint, another indication of crash-damage repair.

• Look at the side of the car to see if all the body panels line up smoothly. Be suspicious of the wavy panels of cars with uneven gaps between panels.

• When on a test drive, the brakes should feel responsive and provide adequate stopping power when travelling at speed.

• Check all items are working properly, such as electronic components. This should include windows, sunroofs, seats, etc.
