The Basics of Jump Starting Your Car

Cars work on batteries to power up the car. When the batteries are dead you may need to charge them again with another car. Here are some basic procedures when jump starting a car.

1. Find the car battery. You need to pop the hood of your car and find where your battery is at. A good rule of thumb is if you ever have any question, look through your car’s owner’s manual.

2. Be sure that the cars are close enough that your cables reach. Then turn off the cars. Pop the hoods and make sure that they are secure.

3. Clamp one end of the jumper cable onto the battery of the car with a working battery. Red means a positive charge. Black means a negative charge. Put the red clamp on the red post on the battery, then do the black clamp on the black post of the battery.

4. Connect the cables to the dead car’s battery. Be sure to never have the metal part of the clamps touch each other. You could also connect the black clamp to a metal part of the car reducing the risk of a dangerous spark happening.

5. Start the engine of the car that is giving the jump. You should keep the car running for at least five minutes, though up to 10 minutes is ideal. Once the time is up you can turn off the engine.

6. You can then start your car up. If the car starts you can remove the clamps. Start by taking off the black clamp first, and then move on to the red.

7. When removing the clamps from the other car do it in the same order. If your car does not start with a jump start take it in to your local Utah auto repair shop. Utah auto repair shops and Utah auto repair mechanics will be best suited to know why your battery is not holding a charge.
