“Well, I would take more,” her college gal pal Julia stuck up her nose and swished her glossy brown hair behind her shoulder.
“Of course you would,” Kristin laughed while speeding around slow drivers in her Mercedes SUV.
Abby remained quiet, as Hallie, her best friend since private grade school, continued to brag about how her new fiancé David proposed to her inside of the Harry Winston store a week ago.
“And then he just let me pick any one I wanted! The whole store clapped for us, and all of Rodeo Drive came to get a good luck. It will most likely make the newspapers,” she stated self-assuredly.
The girls were on their way to Hallie and David’s engagement party at her favorite restaurant Melisse, and Hallie had to admit that her nerves were starting to get the better of her. Only fifteen minutes away from their destination she imagined what a relief it would be to jump out of the car, run home, and hide under her Egyptian cotton sheets. She didn’t know why she was feeling this way. She was used to being the center of attention, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Even with her petite five foot four frame, she was asked to model for many fashion photo shoots, and even had several small talking roles in big hit TV shows and a few movies. It was funny how she wasn’t even trying to be famous, but people couldn’t ever take their eyes off of Hallie’s stunning features.
She wasn’t a typical Los Angeles girl, there was nothing fake about her, and when she went out she hardly wore make up. She didn’t have to. With the combination of her naturally tanned skin, sun highlighted hair, and clear as crystal blue eyes, it wasn’t hard for her to turn heads.
Hallie had particularly turned the head of David Carrington, already one of the most successful lawyers in Los Angeles and only twenty-six years old. His father had made him heir to his renowned law practice, and in the fall he would be attending another year at Harvard.
It was a little intimidating at times for Hallie. She had just graduated from UC Santa Barbara, but it was no Harvard. Being trained all of her life to work hard in school, get a college degree, and then sit back and relax as her husband made ridiculous amounts of money, was actually now becoming a reality, and Hallie suddenly was unsure if that was the way she wanted to live her life.
“We’re here!” Kristin announced taking the key out of the ignition.
“Oh wow, you’re parents invited tons of people!” Julia exclaimed as Hallie cringed that the entire parking lot was full. They were all there for her, her father had rented out the entire place to announce the engagement.
“Are you okay?” Abby asked concerned, it was the first thing she had said all night. The two girls still sat in the back seat of the car as Julia and Kristin rushed to the event.
Hallie closed her eyes and took a deep breath in. “I have to be,” she whispered.
“No, you don’t,” Abby took off her seatbelt and turned to face Hallie. “You don’t’ have to do anything you don’t want to do. Tell me the truth, are you nervous about seeing all those people or are you nervous about marrying David?”
Out of all the girls, Hallie had known Abby the longest, since grade school. And while she could lie to Kristin and Julia, it would be pointless trying to lie to Abby.
“Both, but mostly getting married, the idea is terrifying right now. I think because he just proposed to me, that’s all,” Hallie tried to assure herself.
“You two have been dating like five years. You knew this had to have come eventually. I’m sorry to say it, but I really think you don’t want to marry David.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Hallie demanded, her voice growing louder and louder, “Look at what he gave me, did you look at this?” Hallie shoved her rock of a ring in Abby’s face.
“That is not what matters in a marriage!” Abby exclaimed shoving Hallie’s hand away. “But if you think it does, than go on in there.”

Additional Details
Hallie sat for a moment and stared at her best friend. It was sad how distant they had become. While both girls came from wealthy as hell families, both of them had done their best to stay kind towards others and stay true to themselves. It was a promise they had made a long time ago, but things were different now. The promise was a broken twig only held together by one last strand of wood.
“You know what Abigail?” Hallie leaned forward, her voice soft and sharp like the rumbling of a jaguar growl before it killed, “When you start loving a man you lose. Love isn’t real, power is. As long as you can stay out of love you won’t get hurt.”
“Like you did with-,”
“Don’t! Don’t say his name,” Hallie hissed, and immediately stepped out of the car.
