Is It Normal to Sell Car Engine Without Serial Number?

I have bought an engine for a car (Ford Mondeo) and paid for it 700 pounds. It was delivered after two days to garage. After delivery engineer checked that there is no serial number on it.

Is it legal to sell engine without S/N?

Answer:

Most countries around the world have some sort of legislation that requires engines to have serial numbers.

They tend to be repeated in three or four places on the engine. The legally binding one is stamped, etched, etc, on the block. This is often in quite an inaccessible place, partly to make it hard to remove. It's also often covered by paint when the engine's new, and rust, oil, etc, when it's old.

Other places are:
- burnt into the Eprom chip in the engine management system, accessible when the engine's plugged in to a workshop computer;
- on a convenient label on the engine;
- on the ECM data plate (if it's separate from the engine).

I'm not sure about the legallity of the sale. Start with your local Trading Standards office or Citizens Advice.

I would say its not illegal to sell an engine without a serial number, but it would make me think twice about having it, as to me, it appears that the engine has not been obtained from a legal source.

Nope, it's been stolen

do not fit it you have to show the no in your log book
