Save Money on Maintenance and Automotive Repair Tools
If you have a maintenance issue, such as an oil change, brake pad replacement, or burned-out light, why not save money and do it yourself? There are many “how-to” online tutorials and printed books that can show you step-by-step. The bonus is that you’ll only be spending money on the parts and supplies.. Repair facilities usually mark up auto parts significantly, plus, you’ll be paying them for labor at upwards of about $70 an hour. If you aren’t comfortable with doing any of these tasks yourself, ask your family or friends if they can help you out or consider taking your car to a college campus to have supervised students do the work. Family members are usually happy to help and don’t expect much in return; training schools offer ultra-low-cost repairs that really save you money.
Maintenance and Car Care Don’t Have to Cost an Arm and a Leg
Other maintenance issues can require additional training or tools, but still can be done by you. Take, for example, diagnosing an engine code, getting your rotors resurfaced, changing out your spark plugs, or rotating your tires. Local auto parts stores often times offer certain specialized help with issues like this for much less than the dealers. Error codes and diagnosing problems can be vague and annoying. In some states, auto parts suppliers have the tools to help diagnose problems on the spot. But in some states they do not permit this, but the diagnostic tool is only a nominal cost at around $200. It can cost $90 or so to have your dealer run a diagnostic test on your car’s computer. However, you can add this useful piece to your home automotive repair tools and it will pay for itself with only 2 uses!
How automotive parts Stores Can Save You Big Money
Rotor resurfacing can be especially challenging because they have to be of a certain thickness before they can be resurfaced. A minimal amount of rotor metal must be present so that they remain at a safe thickness. Don’t worry, however, because the resurfacing shops will tell you on the spot if they meet the thickness requirements. Moreover, they have the machine right there to get the job done. Equally as easy, spark plugs can be purchased at the car care and supply store and the minimum gap is displayed visibly on the package. If you don’t already own a gapping tool, one can be bought for only a few dollars. With only a standard lifting jack, you can rotate your own tires.
Save yourself hundreds of dollars each year by doing your own minor repairs on your vehicle. You can stretch your dollar and the life of your vehicle, and use the additional cash to spend more time on the road!
