Suggestion:
Please do no do the above its very wrong and not safe
Connect red lead to positive terminals of both batteries
Connect black lead to a point away from the battery to give a good earth, like an engibe mounting
Start the good car and then start the bad one
Remove the leads in the reverse to above so black off first and then red.

the red lead should go onto the positive side of the battery which is red or there should be a positive sign next to the terminal(+)if its a round type or post type ,if you cant see the + sign look at the terminals and see if one is bigger than the other ,the biggest post is positive then connect the black lead to the negative ,and see if the cars starts.
matters not if car is running or not. Hook positive to positive Hook negative to negative. Have other person start their car and then disconnect carefully so that the ends do not touch together while still connected to a battery, because as soon as you see sparks–the alternator is fried.
Some cars like Jags and MGB and Triumph(all British made are positive ground so be sure you see the (+ or -) on the battery. Assume nothing. Know for certain.
Then it is up to friend to get a battery. The battery is what keeps his alternator from overcharging and burning out. Price out an alternator. That is additional cost because replacing them is cheaper than repairing them.
Batteries last 5 to 7 years then they need replacing.
turn off your car then connect red leads first then black leads.Restart your car and try to start other car you may have to give your car a few revs/seconds to send power to other car
