Classic Car News: Revival of the Reliant Robin…or a Clever April Fool's Day Joke?

When hybrid cars were first introduced many people thought they were a joke, but as the concept began to catch on it soon became a popular idea. The concept of a hybrid motor has generated plenty of interest and has become so popular that many manufactures are following the trend. According to a clever April Fool’s Day joke, MG have plans to create a concept of their own, by creating a new three-wheeled Starling ‘hybird’ car.

So let’s for a second imagine what it would be like if the Reliant Starling was real and not just a well-thought up joke…

In an attempt to bring classic back, PistonHeads.com have reported that the “reliant is to return with a three-wheeled hybrid city car called Starling, as well as the Robin’s rival, Smart ForTwo who plan to bring the Scimitar back”. I would imagine MG are relying on the nostalgia factor which will drive the interest of the classic three-wheeler, just as old fashion styles come back into fashion, cars can also become trendy again.

The Reliant Robin, soon to be revamped into the Starling, may seem a simple concept but older cars can be easier to maintain than complex modern cars, with less intricate electronics going on under the bonnet. Good old-faithfuls tend to live up to their name, with their trustworthy uncomplicated design, and classic reputation, in the case of the Robin, dating back to the 1930′s.

The Starling will hopefully be singing the same chirpy tune as the Robin under MG’s ownership, which could also feature a “159mph version, possibly called the Reliant Sparrowhawk”, which could also be accompanied by the revival of the Kitten Moniker classic model, according to PistonHeads.com.

Keeping the chic vintage design, the Reliant Scimitar will also be plastic-bodied like its predecessor – helping to keep the cost down. The re-born Scimitar will be based on the 1980′s MG TF model, but the new version will include rear-wheel drive and soft top.

PistonHeads.com has reported that “the news of Reliant’s revival comes as the marque celebrates its 75th anniversary”. I don’t know about you but I would be interested to see if MG could retain the cheeky characteristics that made the Reliant brand so unique – well I would be if it wasn’t a clever April Fool’s Day joke!
