Can I Get Far in Life Without a Car?

I'm not in school, my job has VERY promising potential for Restaurant Management (but they require a car and license), and I'm 20 years old. I've moved four times throughout my life, so I really don't have friends who I see on a regular basis. I know a car would help my career, and my social life; but I would prefer a life without a car for the sake of all the expenses–deposit, monthly car payments, monthly insurance payments, and repair costs, which there is no planning for, except to save up but since I'm 20, making roughly $500 a paycheck, a car would take out A LOT of money.

Is a car worth it or can I get far in life without a car?

Suggestion:

My brother has lived in New York City for over twenty years and never had a car. He is very successful and rents one if he travels. He loves to walk and ride the subway and take an occasional taxi, but not often.
