The scientists and engineers working on this technology want the alternative gas vehicles of the future to be very efficient and to be very cheap. Today it is exactly the opposite with the alternative gas vehicles. You have to pay a lot of money and you get about 40 miles with one charge. Slowly, but surely, the alternative fuel vehicles will be cheaper and more efficient on one tank or one charge.
The most efficient alternative fuel vehicles today are the hybrid ones that use a small petrol engine to power a generator and charge the batteries for the bigger, more powerful electric engine. These are efficient and very reliable and you can use them whenever you need to without waiting ten hours for the batteries to charge. I think this is the future, hybrid cars with very small petrol engines that act like generators, charging the batteries for the electric motor. Somehow, I think the other technologies they are trying to develop in this field will be far behind the hybrid one. To me at least, this is the logical option.
Alternative fuel vehicles in the future will surely be efficient, whatever type they will be and we will surely be able to afford one, but I can’t tell you more about how they will look and what technology they will use. As I said, it makes more sense to try and develop the hybrid path more and give that more attention, because every other way you look it there are things you just can’t fix. With the hybrid one everything you need is already there.
